Crafted in solid beech, this sculptural desk by Seltz from the 1980s combines functional ingenuity with expressive form, echoing the design principles associated with Pierre Chapo.

Design

Produced during a period when Chapo was involved with Seltz, the piece carries traces of his architectural thinking, clean lines, material honesty, and a structural clarity that elevates utility. The organically contoured top contrasts a softly curved edge with a half-round extension blade that pivots outward, supported by an aluminium guide strip discreetly integrated beneath. This pivoting mechanism allows the top to shift position, offering flexibility in use and reinforcing the desk’s technical sophistication.

A black lacquered column visually supports the blade, creating a moment of suspension. To the left, a vertically ribbed leg grounds the structure. On the right, a pedestal in solid beech houses three drawers with carved, diagonally inset handles. The upper drawer is fitted with an internal organiser tray, carved compartments designed for writing tools and smaller items. The beech wood has developed a warm patina over time, and the joinery is clean and deliberate, in line with the high standards of the Seltz workshop.

An elegant fusion of sculpture and function, this desk suits a refined workspace or collector’s interior.

Condition

The condition is very good as it is partially restored, only with some minor wear to the surfaces. The pivoting blade functions smoothly along the aluminium guide, and all drawers operate as intended.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
