A solid presence with architectural rhythm, this Amsterdamse School coffee table embodies the geometric elegance and structural clarity characteristic of the movement. Designed and crafted in the Netherlands during the 1920s, it reflects the spirited interplay between function and expression that defined Dutch Art Deco.

Design

The round tabletop, executed in oak with a rich, warm finish, rests on four upright legs that extend with subtle tapering towards a sculptural base. Each leg is finished with ebonised wooden feet, a contrasting detail that subtly anchors the piece visually and structurally. At the heart of the construction lies a beautifully engineered X-shaped stretcher, adding both visual interest and enhanced stability. The joinery throughout is finely resolved, and careful attention has been paid to proportion and weight. The overhanging top is slightly recessed into a thickened apron, which gently curves inwards, this detail softens the structural directness and introduces a quiet tension.

The use of oak was common among Amsterdamse School designers, not only for its durability but also for the expressive grain that becomes part of the decorative language. While the maker of this piece remains unidentified, its design aligns with the ideals of furniture architects such as Piet Kramer and Cornelis van der Sluys, who fused expressive form with structural logic.

Condition

The condition is good. Minor signs of age are visible at the feet and along the apron, in line with decades of careful use.
