Architecture on the scale of furniture. This Dutch wardrobe translates the expressive vocabulary of the Amsterdam School into a functional piece, combining a solid oak construction with carefully placed coromandel details. Dating from around the 1920s, its geometric decoration and substantial proportions give it a distinctly architectural character.

Design

The wardrobe is constructed predominantly in oak, its warm grain forming a restrained background for the darker coromandel inlays. Across the two outer doors, narrow vertical strips of coromandel rise and fall at different heights. Their stepped arrangement creates rhythm across the façade and draws the eye upwards. Small angular inlays at the corners continue this graphic treatment, connecting the decoration to the framework of the cabinet.

Between these doors sits a full-length mirrored panel, introducing a reflective surface into an otherwise solid composition. Below, two wide drawers provide further storage and retain dark wooden handles that correspond with the coromandel accents above. A dark plinth anchors the wardrobe visually and reinforces its architectural construction.

Inside, the cabinet is divided into practical storage sections with wooden shelves and a metal hanging rail. Original-style locks and a decorative key remain present, together with the cylindrical dark-wood door handles. The drawer construction and visible joinery underline the cabinetmaker’s approach to a piece intended for everyday use.

Furniture associated with the Amsterdam School often shared the movement’s broader interest in treating architecture, interiors and objects as parts of a coherent environment. Museum Het Schip describes this concern for a unified whole as characteristic of the movement. Here, that architectural thinking appears in the strong framing, stepped motifs and controlled contrast between oak and darker timber.

With its generous storage, central mirror and measured geometric ornament, this wardrobe combines practical bedroom furniture with the sculptural character associated with Dutch Amsterdam School design. Its vertical composition works particularly well as a freestanding statement piece in both period and contemporary interiors.

Condition

The wardrobe has been fully restored and is in very good condition, retaining signs consistent with its age and previous use. The wood surfaces, doors, drawers, interior fittings and mirror present well following restoration.
