Designed with poise and purpose, this 1960s bar cabinet by Fábrica de Móveis Giesse encapsulates the confident lines and noble materials characteristic of Brazilian mid-century modern design. The interplay between its rich wooden grain, dark glass top, and bold brass accents adds rhythm and a sculptural presence.

Design

The bar is clad in beautifully figured veneer, set upon cylindrical legs and curved at the front in a gentle arc. The upper edge is punctuated with a row of geometric brass ornaments: pyramidal in shape and evenly spaced, they lend a sense of balance and architectural articulation. A black smoked glass top adds contrast, refinement, and practical durability. On the reverse, a highly functional arrangement of drawers, shelves, and a lockable cabinet provides ample storage. The interior shows thoughtful design choices: brass fittings, dovetail joints, and a contrasting lighter wood interior.

This piece was produced by Fábrica de Móveis Giesse, a São Paulo-based company active in the 1950s–1970s, which contributed to the vibrant Brazilian design movement. While specific designers behind the piece are not documented, the quality and visual language align with the aesthetic set by Sergio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin, and contemporaries working in noble hardwoods with sculptural tactility.

Condition

The bar cabinet is in very good condition. It has undergone partial restoration, including light refinishing of the wood and polishing of the brass details and adding a new smoked glass top. Minor wear consistent with age is visible.
