Carlo Nason worked extensively with AV Mazzega in Murano, and model S502 is documented in dealer references as one of the glass bowls associated with that collaboration during the 1970s. The present example retains both an AV Mazzega Murano label and an incised A.V. Mazzega Murano signature, with a further Spagna Vetri di Murano label visible in the photographs.
Design
The bowl is built from a single broad sheet of glass folded up into an irregular open form rather than a regular circular or oval vessel. From above, the outline reads almost as a square that has been pushed and lifted at different points: one corner rises sharply, the opposite side extends into a flatter point, and the remaining edges dip and turn back inwards. That uneven rim keeps the object from settling into one fixed frontal view. Seen from different angles in the photographs, it shifts between a shallow dish, a sharply creased folded plane and a more elevated vessel with projecting peaks.
Colour is concentrated to one side of the composition rather than spread evenly across the whole bowl. A saturated turquoise-blue section occupies one long side and continues into an adjacent corner, finished with a darker cobalt-toned rim that remains clearly legible at the edge. The rest of the body is largely clear, so the blue does not read as an applied pattern but as a weighted area within the mass of the object. That asymmetrical distribution alters the balance of the outline: the blue side appears denser and more emphatic in profile, and where it meets the clear glass the transition creates a visible change in depth, especially around the folded corner nearest the base.
The glass itself is not optically flat. Close photographs show rippling across the walls, a lightly hammered or pebbled texture through parts of the base, and small bubbles and darker streak-like inclusions within the blue areas. These surface and internal variations break up reflections across the bowl and make the clear sections appear milky in some views and more transparent in others. On the white plinth, light passing through the blue side throws a broad aqua cast onto the surface below, with the textured base breaking that colour into a moving network of brighter and softer patches rather than one solid block of shadow.
The relation between the folded sides and the point of support is central to the design. There is no separate foot or pedestal; instead, the bowl meets the surface through its lower folds, so the centre appears suspended between rising sides. In side view this creates a low hovering profile, with one clear point extending outward and the blue corner lifting steeply above it. The rim thickness stays visible around the perimeter, most clearly along the dark blue edge, which gives definition to each fold and makes the bends at the corners read as structural turns in the glass rather than loose undulations. The applied AV Mazzega Murano label, the scratched A.V. Mazzega Murano signature and the further Spagna Vetri di Murano label remain visible in the photographs, placing those formal effects within the object itself rather than relying on comparison alone.
Condition
Vintage condition with visible age and use. The supplied photographs show light surface wear, small scratches and minor handling marks, along with bubbles and internal variation from manufacture; no chips or cracks.
