Italian lighting from the 1970s often blurred the line between lighting and sculpture. The LS 143 ceiling fixture by Carlo Nason for AV Mazzega is a fine example, combining Murano glass craftsmanship with a soft, organic shape.

Design

The fixture is made from two hand-blown Murano glass elements. A white opaline inner diffuser conceals the light source and provides a warm, even glow. Around it sits a second opaline glass shade with a subtle pale blue tint, tapering into an elegant drop shape. The layered construction gives the glass depth and creates a beautiful effect when illuminated.

A simple brushed metal ceiling mount keeps the focus on the glass. Like many of Carlo Nason's designs, the form is clean and understated, relying on the quality of the material and the interaction with light rather than decoration. Produced by AV Mazzega, one of Murano's leading glass manufacturers, the fixture reflects the innovative Italian lighting design of the period.

Its modest size and sculptural shape make it suitable for a hallway, bedroom, living room or as part of a larger lighting composition.
