A twilight scene where colour becomes atmosphere and motion turns lyrical. 'Courses en nocturne' by André Brasilier evokes a poetic sense of movement across a surreal landscape, rendered with the painter’s unmistakable sensitivity to form and rhythm.

This oil on canvas work from 2015 captures a nocturnal horse race, a recurring theme in Brasilier’s oeuvre. Bold strokes in blue, pink, and orange create an otherworldly racecourse beneath a moonlit sky. The horses, reduced to rhythmic silhouettes, pulse across the canvas in shades of cobalt, ochre and black. A serpentine track curves gently behind them, painted in broad, cotton-candy pinks layered over deep ultramarine, guiding the eye back toward the horizon. At the top, a pale moon glows behind a shadowy tree line, lending a theatrical backdrop to the foreground’s energetic sweep.

Brasilier’s palette here is deliberately non-naturalistic. The colours are emotional choices, reflecting his interest in painting as music; a way to express sensations rather than document reality. In this work, the horses appear almost weightless, galloping not through space but across a memory or a dream. The layering of paint, from translucent glazes to dense impasto, adds depth and movement to the surface, echoing the rhythm of hooves and heartbeat.

Signed in the lower right corner and signed with initials, dated and titled on the stretcher. It reflects the artist’s continued mastery well into his later career, bringing together decades of exploration in colour, motion and poetry.

This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the artist's studio.
