A clear example of Gerrit Rietveld's functional approach to furniture design, the iconic Crate Chair was originally designed in 1934. This example is believed to be a Cassina production from the 1970s, executed in ash wood with a clear lacquer finish that highlights the natural grain.
Design
The Crate series was conceived during a period of economic restraint, with Rietveld using standard wooden planks inspired by the inexpensive timber found in shipping crates. Rather than concealing the construction, he celebrated it. Every board serves a clear purpose, resulting in a design that is honest, practical, and instantly recognizable. Wide flat planes, straight lines, and open spaces give the chair its architectural character while maintaining a surprisingly comfortable seating position.
From 1935 onwards, the Crate furniture was sold by the renowned Amsterdam department store Metz & Co. Marketed as 'weekend furniture,' the series was intended for holiday homes, sunrooms, student rooms, and children's interiors. Its affordable price and straightforward construction reflected Rietveld's ambition to make well-designed furniture accessible to a wider audience. Today, the Crate Chair is regarded as one of the designer's most influential creations and remains a timeless example of Dutch modernism.
With its honest construction and unmistakable geometric form, the Crate Chair continues to feel as relevant today as when it was first introduced. This Cassina edition faithfully captures the spirit of Rietveld's original design while offering the quality associated with the Italian manufacturer.
Condition
The chair is in good vintage condition with signs of age and use, including several stains and surface wear that are consistent with its history. These traces contribute to the authentic character of the piece.
