A sculptural statement in black leather and fibreglass; this original Joe Colombo Elda chair is here paired with a rare Mario Brunu-designed pouf. Both produced by Comfort, Italy, in the late 1960s to early 1970s.
Design
Designed in 1963, the Elda chair is one of Colombo’s most recognisable works, pioneering the use of fibreglass in furniture. Its form is futuristic and human-centric; a deep, swivelling shell with seven padded leather cushions that create a cocoon like seat. This example features black leather upholstery with a subtle patina, enhancing the textural contrast with the glossy fibreglass base. A swivel base maintains the chair’s sculptural stance while adding functionality.
The accompanying pouf, designed by Italian designer Mario Brunu, echoes the aesthetic language of the period. Also produced by Comfort, it was part of the “Rodica” lounge series. Its domed shape, low profile, and matching black leather and fibreglass construction offer a harmonious complement to the Elda. While not originally conceived as a set, the two pieces share material sensibilities and proportion, making this a compelling pairing rarely found on the market.
Conditions
Both the chair and pouf are in good vintage condition. The leather shows light signs of use consistent with age. The fibreglass shells remain structurally sound with minor surface wear.
I recently bought some amazing Artwork from AtKris Studio online. The whole experience was amazing. The transaction was amazingly efficient. The crating and shipping of the artwork to the United States from the Netherlands could not have gone smoother and the customer service was spot on!! Krista was amazing and I highly recommend AtKris Studio!
Table arrived very well crated, seller made process seamless.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
