A remarkable interplay of architectural form and masterful joinery lies at the heart of this ‘Scaligera’ sideboard by Franco Poli for Bernini, crafted in Italy during the 1980s.

Design

With its angular geometry and sculptural presence, this multifunctional cabinet reveals a balance between minimalist language and mechanical ingenuity. Made in richly grained walnut veneer with lighter birch ply edges, the construction showcases a refined understanding of proportion logic. The stepped façade opens in a kinetic rhythm of doors and drawers, leading to a surprisingly versatile interior of custom-designed compartments, sliding trays, and lift-top panels. A concealed bar section, including drawers and adjustable shelving, is seamlessly integrated into the central area; suggesting the piece may have been conceived as both a sideboard and bar cabinet.

Franco Poli, trained in Verona and closely associated with Bernini, championed an approach to design that was both intellectual and tactile. His work often reflects a fusion of rationalist principles with an underlying sensuality in material handling. He saw furniture not as static objects, but as dynamic systems that respond to human interaction. In the ‘Scaligera’, this thinking manifests in the precision of movement, the modular logic of compartments, and the deliberate contrast between structure and finish. Each element is purposefully designed, yet never overworked.

This is a masterfully engineered object that feels simultaneously contemporary and deeply rooted in Italian cabinetmaking tradition.

Condition
This sideboard is in very good original condition with minimal signs of wear. The wood has aged beautifully, and all moving components operate smoothly.
