A rare box sofa by Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen, dating from around the 1940s. Its enclosed wooden frame and carefully shaped upholstery reflect Henningsen’s refined approach to traditional cabinetmaking.

Design

The sofa features a rectangular mahogany case with high, closed sides and a continuous wooden base. Within this architectural frame, the upholstered interior forms a softer, curved silhouette. The seat and back are divided into three sections, while the padded sides follow the rounded lower corners of the frame.

Subtle moulded edges accentuate the outline of the sofa without adding unnecessary decoration. At the front, the solid base is raised on tapered legs, giving the substantial design a lighter appearance. The grain and warm tone of the mahogany contrast with the orange upholstery, which has dark flecks and matching piping.

Frits Henningsen was known for producing furniture in his own Copenhagen workshop, maintaining close control over both design and execution. Unlike many of his Danish contemporaries, he often drew upon classical furniture traditions. This sofa combines those references with restrained proportions and a clear focus on craftsmanship.

An uncommon example of Danish cabinetmaking, this box sofa offers generous seating within a disciplined wooden structure. Its scale and enclosed form give it a strong presence while retaining a comfortable character.

Condition

The wooden frame remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with its age. The sofa has been re-upholstered in the past years in an orang colored fabric - the upholstery is in very good condition and presents well.
