A sculptural presence with a bold rhythm, this “Romanus” credenza by Luciano Frigerio captures the designer’s signature fusion of fine materials and architectural strength.

Design

Crafted in Italy during the 1970s, this piece reflects Frigerio’s interest in sculptural forms and surface treatment. The front is composed of individually articulated vertical panels in myrtle wood, each subtly stepped to create a relief-like façade. Across this rhythmic surface, a single band of gilt brass elements stretches in a diagonal sweep, creating a sense of movement and energy. The gold detailing bears small pits and marks, enhancing its tactile quality and suggesting a hand-finished process. The credenza subtly bows forward along its front edge, softening the overall mass and echoing the undulation of the brass band. Inside, practical compartments and drawers are revealed, thoughtfully arranged for storage while preserving the integrity of the sculptural front.

Luciano Frigerio trained as both a furniture designer and composer, and his pieces often feel like visual compositions. His work is typified by a bold interplay of metal and wood, often produced in limited quantities. The “Romanus” series is among his most ambitious, merging Brutalist principles with Italian craftsmanship.

This is a monumental yet refined piece, suitable for anchoring a wall in a residential or commercial interior. Its bold materials speak of confidence, but the detailing reveals care and thought.

Condition

The credenza is in good condition and has been partially restored. The myrtle wood surfaces have been refreshed while preserving the original character. Brass retains its original finish with patination throughout; some minor imperfections are visible, especially on the central panels.
