Few designers captured the optimism of post-war Italian design quite like Joe Colombo. Known for his forward-looking vision and unconventional approach to furniture and interiors, Colombo consistently sought new ways of shaping modern living. His work remains celebrated for its balance between experimentation, comfort and sculptural form.

Design

Originally designed in 1964 for Bonacina 1889, the Nastro lounge chair occupies a distinctive place within Colombo’s oeuvre. Rather than focusing on plastics and industrial materials, which often characterised his work during the 1960s, this project turned towards the longstanding Italian tradition of rattan craftsmanship. The result is a chair that combines artisanal production with a highly contemporary silhouette.

Its defining feature is the continuous ribbon-like structure from which the chair takes its name. Layers of bent rattan sweep from the base into the armrests and backrest, creating a fluid form that appears almost drawn in a single gesture. The repetition of the parallel rattan elements introduces rhythm and depth, giving the design a sculptural quality from every angle.

Bonacina reintroduced the model in 2016, carefully preserving Colombo’s original concept while refining it for contemporary use. In this edition, the rattan frame is finished in black, emphasising the graphic character of the design and creating a strong contrast with the off-white upholstery. Generous polyurethane cushions provide a high level of comfort, while the removable fabric cover features a subtle woven texture with a delicate reflective thread. Slightly raised front feet further enhance the seating position, lending the chair a relaxed yet supportive posture.

Elegant and architectural, these lounge chairs work equally well in residential interiors, hospitality settings or curated design collections.

Condition

Both lounge chairs are in very good condition. The black lacquered rattan frames present beautifully, and the upholstery remains fresh and well-maintained with only minimal signs of use consistent with careful ownership.
