This pair of Italian nightstands presents a compact cabinet form set on open supports, with the main volume lifted clear of the floor. Their character comes from the contrast between the ribbed fronts and the broad, cut-away side panels rather than from applied ornament.
Design
Each nightstand is built around a rectangular upper case with a single drawer set above an open shelf. That arrangement gives the piece two clearly separated zones: a closed front at the top and a lighter, open section below. Seen from the front, the broad drawer band establishes the visual weight of the design, and the shelf beneath breaks that mass by leaving space visible through the frame. This prevents the cabinet from reading as a solid block, even though the upper section has substantial depth.
The drawer fronts are formed with closely spaced vertical fluting across nearly the full width. This treatment changes the surface from a plain plane into a lined field that catches light unevenly across its length, so the front appears darker and more articulated than the smoother side panels and shelf. The fluted front also sharpens the distinction between the drawer section and the rest of the body. Dovetail joints are visible at the drawer corners, adding a further construction detail that contrasts with the more formal exterior face.
At the top, the wooden side panels continue upward beyond the main surface to form low opposing ends, and between them sits an inset glass panel. This produces a layered top view: wood around the perimeter, a fine green-tinted glass edge at the centre, and raised side elements framing the length. From the side, those projecting ends extend the outline beyond the drawer front and back edge, giving the upper section a more shaped profile than a standard box cabinet. The glass introduces a thinner, sharper line at the top, which offsets the deeper relief of the ribbed drawer beneath.
The side supports are among the clearest sculptural elements. Rather than separate narrow legs attached to a case, each side is cut from a broad panel that curves inward above the front support before dropping to the floor in tapering legs. This produces an open arch-like void on each side and makes the support structure readable as part of the overall profile. The lower shelf sits between these supports and reinforces the horizontal span, so the piece changes character according to viewpoint: from the front the drawer dominates, from the side the cut-out panel and tapering legs define the silhouette, and from an angle the relationship between the lifted cabinet and open base becomes most apparent.
Condition
Vintage condition with visible wear consistent with age and use. The wood surfaces show scratches, abrasions and finish wear, particularly to the side panels and upper edges, and there are further small marks to the legs; the glass inset tops are present. These nightstands will be checked in our restoration workshop before shipping.
Table arrived very well crated, seller made process seamless.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
Excellent responsiveness, and with wonderful curatorial chops!
