Some designs quietly shape the visual language of post-war interiors. These six stackable chairs embody that spirit, combining industrial efficiency with an elegant use of moulded wood and tubular steel. Produced in the manner of the celebrated Pagholz seating systems, they reflect a period when furniture was expected to be durable, functional and visually light.
Design
Developed during the mid-century era, Pagholz became known for its patented process of compressing layers of beech veneer with synthetic resin under high pressure. The result was a material that offered exceptional strength while allowing fluid, organic forms. These chairs closely follow that tradition, featuring a single moulded shell with a continuous curve from seat to backrest. The warm reddish-brown finish highlights the natural grain patterns of the wood, giving each chair a distinct character despite their industrial origins.
Rather than relying on ornament, the design draws attention through proportion and construction. The slender chrome-plated tubular steel sled bases create a visual contrast with the sculpted wooden shells, lending the chairs a sense of lightness. Viewed from the side, the gentle sweep of the seat and back reveals an ergonomic consideration that became increasingly important in European furniture design during the 1950s and 1960s. Equally practical, the chairs can be stacked when not in use, making them suitable for dining rooms, meeting spaces, studios or contemporary interiors where flexibility remains valued.
Their restrained appearance allows the materials to take centre stage. The combination of moulded wood and polished steel has aged gracefully, retaining the clarity and honesty that characterised much of post-war modernist design.
Condition
The chairs remain in good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with their history. Minor wear, small marks and light variations in the wooden surfaces are present, alongside gentle patination to the chrome frames. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity of the set and do not detract from its overall appearance or functionality.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
Quality, flexibility, very good communication, very happy with the coffee table I bought.
Table arrived very well crated, seller made process seamless.
