A compact study in geometry and craftsmanship, this Dutch side table combines the expressive character of the Amsterdam School with a more controlled architectural structure. Oak forms the main composition, with dark coromandel accents introducing a subtle graphic contrast across the surface.

Design

The circular top is composed of carefully arranged sections of oak, with the grain changing direction from one panel to the next. Four small square coromandel inlays punctuate this pattern near the perimeter, creating a measured rhythm against the warm oak. A broad circular apron gives the top visual weight, balanced by the open construction below.

Four upright supports connect the top to intersecting cross-form stretchers at floor level. Their outer edges are softly rounded, whilst darker inner elements feature a repeated scalloped carving. This small decorative intervention is particularly characteristic of Amsterdam School furniture, where architectural construction was frequently combined with expressive details and contrasting timbers. The cross-shaped base provides stability and allows the table to retain an open appearance from every angle.

Originating in the Netherlands during the early twentieth century, the Amsterdam School developed first through architecture before finding expression in furniture and decorative arts. Furniture associated with the movement often favoured substantial timber, visible craftsmanship and sculptural detailing. Coromandel was regularly used as a contrasting material in higher-quality Dutch furniture of the period. Comparable Dutch tables combine Amsterdam School expression with the more restrained geometry associated with the Hague School, making a precise stylistic classification difficult in some cases.

The circular top and architectural base give this table presence without requiring much space. Positioned beside an armchair, between lounge seating or as an occasional table, it offers a distinct example of Dutch interwar furniture design.

Condition

The table remains in good vintage condition, with minor traces of use and ageing visible across the oak. Its surface retains an attractive patina, and the construction is well preserved.
