Gianni Pinna's work is defined by his mastery of the sculptor’s tools. This 1970s table lamp exemplifies his singular focus on hand-carved wood, treating it as both structure and surface, form and expression. Signed by the artist, this rare piece stands apart for its dynamic composition and graphic interplay of tone and depth.
Design
The body is carved from solid hardwood, with one side shaped into sweeping contours, recessed voids, and gently tapering lines. These cutouts and curves create a flowing rhythm that evokes both totemic references and abstract sculpture. The opposite side, finished in a darkened treatment, is carved with sharply modelled reliefs, ridged patterns, and rounded protrusions. Though both surfaces are of the same material, the tonal contrast and variation in texture produce a striking visual dialogue.
The cylindrical shade in woven brown textile complements the warmth of the wood and grounds the overall form. When lit, the lamp reveals the complexity of its carving through soft shadow and highlight. It’s a piece that resists categorisation—at once functional and sculptural, ornamental yet architectural.
Condition
This lamp is in good vintage condition. Minor wear can be found on the carved surfaces.
The current lampshade is available separately for €200.
