Carlo Nason’s LT 343 floor lamp brings the expressive possibilities of Murano glass into an unusually slender architectural form. Designed for Mazzega around 1970, the model combines a tall chromed steel stem with a sculptural crown of curved glass blades, turning a single light source into an atmospheric composition.

Born in Murano in 1935 into a family of glassmakers, Nason developed his work from direct knowledge of Venetian glass production. His designs for Mazzega frequently moved away from conventional shades, treating glass as the principal structural and visual element of the lamp.

Design

Here, a circular metal base rises into a narrow chromed steel stem measuring approximately two metres in height on documented examples of the model. Above it sits the LT 343’s distinctive flower-like diffuser, formed from numerous semi-circular glass blades arranged concentrically around a single bulb. Each blade curves upwards from its mounting point, producing the layered silhouette. The glass blades can rotate, allowing the arrangement of the diffuser to be altered.

Clear and lightly smoked sections alternate throughout the composition. Their textured surfaces catch and refract the light, creating changing reflections across neighbouring blades. When illuminated, the exposed bulb sends a warm glow through the overlapping glass; switched off, the individual pieces and their subtle variations become more apparent. Metal discs at the base of each blade organise the glass around the central fitting and give the otherwise organic crown a clear construction.

The LT 343 captures Nason’s approach to lighting through a direct relationship between glass, structure and illumination. Its restrained metal support leaves the Murano glass crown to define the object, giving the lamp a sculptural presence from every angle.

Condition

The lamp is in perfect vintage condition, with little age-related wear visible to the metal components.
