A mesmerising dialogue between material and light, this LT 378 floor lamp by Carlo Nason for Mazzega distils the essence of 1970s Italian design. Sculptural in presence and poetic in glow, it demonstrates the precision of Murano glass craftsmanship and the vision of its designer.

Design

The lamp is built from a vertical stack of alternating clear and tobacco-tinted Murano glass elements, each with a textured surface that refracts light in unexpected ways. These curved segments form a lattice-like structure, reminiscent of architectural columns, around a central metal armature, giving the piece both volume and rhythm. Vertical glass panels hold the curved segments together.

When lit, the warm hue of the tobacco glass contrasts with the crystalline clarity of the clear sections, producing a layered light that is both atmospheric and structured. The amber tones evoke the palette of the 1970s, while the repetition of forms creates a sense of order and refinement.

Designed by Carlo Nason, a member of the renowned Venetian glassmaking family, the LT 378 reflects his experimental yet grounded approach. Working with Mazzega, Nason often challenged the boundaries of traditional Murano techniques, favouring modularity and transparency over ornamentation. This lamp, likely featured in Mazzega’s later catalogues, embodies that design philosophy.

The lamp is described in Mazzega Catalogue #9 on page 94 / 95 and in the book Carlo Nason 'Handle with Care'.

Condition

The lamp is in very good vintage condition. One vertical glass panel is carefully restored which is hardly noticable. Minor signs of age on the metal base are consistent with gentle use over time.
