A quiet dialogue between glass and light defines this LT 378 floor lamp by Carlo Nason for Mazzega. Conceived during the expressive years of Italian lighting design in the 1970s, the piece reflects a moment when Murano glassmakers and designers sought new sculptural languages. The lamp balances clarity, colour and structure, presenting light as both function and composition.

Design

The design is formed by a vertical sequence of curved Murano glass segments in alternating clear and tobacco tones. Each element carries a textured surface that refracts light and introduces subtle variation across the column. These curved sections are arranged around a central metal armature and secured by slim vertical glass panels, creating a lattice-like construction. The repetition of glass components establishes a rhythm reminiscent of architectural columns. Once illuminated, the tobacco-coloured elements introduce a warm amber glow that contrasts with the transparency of the clear sections. Light filters through the textured surfaces and layered construction, producing a structured yet atmospheric illumination. The object retains a strong sculptural presence even when unlit, emphasising Nason’s interest in modular glass forms.

Carlo Nason, born into a long-standing Venetian family of glassmakers, developed a design language grounded in experimentation with traditional Murano techniques. His collaborations with Mazzega often favoured modular compositions and transparency rather than decorative excess. The LT 378 reflects that approach, presenting glass as a structural material rather than pure ornament. The model appears in Mazzega Catalogue no. 9 (pp. 94–95) and is documented in the publication Carlo Nason – Handle with Care.

Condition

The lamp remains in very good vintage condition with minor wear on the metal base corresponds with age and use.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
