There are moments in design history where light becomes architecture. The “Cometa” floor lamp, designed in 1971 by Ettore Sottsass for Design Centre / Poltronova, belongs to that category.
Design
Created during Sottsass’s highly experimental period in the early 1970s, this lamp reflects his shift away from strict modernist rationalism toward a more emotional and symbolic vocabulary. A tall vertical column in moulded plastic rises from a square painted metal base, its softly undulating profile introducing rhythm and movement into an otherwise geometric structure. Along its height runs a slender aluminium spine, adding structural clarity and a subtle graphic line. When illuminated, the diffuser emits a warm, atmospheric glow that intensifies toward the upper section, where a gentle pink hue crowns the composition.
The dialogue between industrial materials, painted metal, aluminium and plastic, and the almost organic contour of the body reveals Sottsass’s interest in contrast and tension. Produced by Design Centre, Poltronova’s research-oriented branch, the piece sits at the threshold of the radical ideas that would later culminate in Memphis.
Condition
The lamp remains in very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. Minor surface traces on the base and subtle signs of use on the plastic diffuser are visible upon close inspection. There is a small restoration at the top of the lamp, which is hardly visible.
The video provides a clear picture of the lamp and is recommended to watch.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
I recently bought some amazing Artwork from AtKris Studio online. The whole experience was amazing. The transaction was amazingly efficient. The crating and shipping of the artwork to the United States from the Netherlands could not have gone smoother and the customer service was spot on!! Krista was amazing and I highly recommend AtKris Studio!
Quality, flexibility, very good communication, very happy with the coffee table I bought.
