Designed to both illuminate and captivate, this pair of table lamps by Belgian artist-designer George Mathias fuses artistic expression with geometric clarity. Created in the 1980s, they reflect Mathias’ sculptural approach to lighting, where decorative surfaces meet architectural structure.
Design
Each lamp rests on a black lacquered base, supporting an octagonal body in brushed brass and lacquered framing. The front panels feature etched gilded brass reliefs, one depicting a stylised heron, the other a symbolic composition of sun, sea, and birds. These panels are individually signed and numbered by the artist (e.g. 93/150), confirming their limited-edition status. According to a label on the underside, the gilded surfaces are guaranteed 23-carat fine gold, adding further distinction to the craftsmanship. The acid-etched technique introduces a delicate texture that catches light subtly across the composition.
The shades, covered in crocodile-embossed black velvet with warm gold linings, complement the lustre of the brass without overwhelming it. A sharply turned brass finial completes the lamps, adding a sculptural punctuation. Balanced between bold geometry and decorative intricacy, they suit grand interiors, on consoles, sideboards or nightstands.
A refined and collectible lighting pair by a designer known for elevating decorative art to architectural statement.
Condition
The lamps are in very good condition, with minimal wear to the brass and lacquer. Shades remain clean and structurally intact. Original gold finish and artist signatures are well preserved.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
I just received the absolutely gorgeous credenza yesterday. It was professionally packaged and delivered just as promised. I cannot more highly recommend AtKris Studio.
Quality, flexibility, very good communication, very happy with the coffee table I bought.
