An icon of mid-century design, the Egg Pod Chair by Eero Aarnio captures the optimism and experimentation of the 1960s. First introduced in 1963, it offered not only an innovative silhouette but also a new kind of seated experience: one of privacy, comfort and futuristic flair.
Design
Constructed from fibreglass-reinforced polyester, this example shows the characteristic glossy black shell which encases a vividly upholstered red interior. The contrast between the curved lacquered exterior and the soft, cocoon-like inner lining is deliberate and theatrical. Aarnio was interested in the interaction between user and object, how furniture could shape the room and affect behaviour. The chair rests on a circular pedestal base that allows it to swivel, giving freedom of movement while maintaining its enclosed feel. Its egg-like form, technically advanced for its time, was inspired in part by space-age aesthetics and in part by Aarnio’s desire to create a “room within a room.” The bold red fabric softens the acoustic qualities, enhancing its sense of seclusion. Today, the piece remains a cultural reference point, featured in films, fashion shoots and cutting-edge interiors.
A sculptural piece that still reads as contemporary, more than half a century after its creation.
Condition
The chair is in good vintage condition, with some scattered surface scratches to the black shell and light wear to the upholstery. Swivel mechanism functions smoothly.
Excellent responsiveness, and with wonderful curatorial chops!
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
Quality, flexibility, very good communication, very happy with the coffee table I bought.
