Italian lighting from the mid-20th century often combined sculptural forms with an experimental approach to materials. This floor lamp, attributed to Gino Vistosi, is a fine example of this approach. Its angular metal structure contrasts with an elongated amber-yellow glass shade, creating a composition in which geometry and light are equally important.

Design

The lamp is constructed around a slender, asymmetrical metal frame that rises from a triangular stone base. Its angular silhouette is formed by a series of sharp bends, creating a sense of movement and visual tension. Sections of dark metal alternate with brass-toned details, adding subtle variation to the otherwise restrained structure.

Suspended within this framework is an elongated glass diffuser, tapering towards the top and widening into a faceted lower section. The amber-yellow glass produces a warm, atmospheric light, changing in intensity across its surface. When illuminated, the shade becomes the central element of the composition, its sculptural shape accentuated by the surrounding metalwork.

A particularly interesting detail is the relationship between the glass and its supporting structure. A narrow metal arm connects the upper section of the diffuser to the frame, ending in a small pointed finial. Beneath the glass, a brass-toned fitting rests on a horizontal support. This arrangement gives the impression of a suspended object, balanced within an architectural framework.

The triangular stone base echoes the geometric character of the lamp and provides a visual counterweight to its slender construction. A small switch is positioned directly on the base.

Combining expressive geometry with the warmth of coloured glass, this floor lamp reflects the experimental character of Italian post-war lighting. Its tall, open structure lends itself particularly well to a living room, entrance hall or carefully composed interior.

Condition

The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use. The metal elements display patination and surface wear, particularly around the brass-toned fittings, and the stone base has minor marks consistent with its age.
