Giovanni Michelucci approached furniture with the sensibility of an architect and the instincts of a craftsman. Better known for his architecture, the Italian designer also maintained a close relationship with furniture throughout his career, seeing it as a natural part of domestic space. His Arcigliano collection grew from this interest and from his collaboration with the Tuscan workshop of Sergio and Marcello Fantacci.

Design

This walnut sideboard, or madia, belongs to the Arcigliano series and combines a substantial cabinet with a separate drawer unit resting loosely on top. This modular construction gives the piece an architectural quality: two horizontal volumes are stacked rather than conceived as one continuous carcass. Related Arcigliano furniture was produced by Fantacci from the 1970s onwards, with documented examples showing Michelucci's preference for walnut, restrained surfaces and hand-finished details.

Across the lower cabinet, four doors conceal generous storage compartments fitted with shelves. Above them sits a sequence of drawers in varying widths. Their fronts incorporate curved recessed grips, removing the need for applied hardware and preserving the long horizontal line of the upper section.

A different gesture marks the centre. Two sculpted walnut handles meet across the central doors to form a single geometric composition. Their softened contours contrast with the otherwise rectilinear construction. Michelucci placed considerable value on such handmade elements; contemporary writing on his furniture describes the handle as something closer to sculpture than conventional hardware and records his interest in combining machine production with the intervention of the craftsman.

Walnut veneer is used across the broad surfaces, with solid walnut details giving definition to the construction. Michelucci's Arcigliano furniture drew on the straightforward character of traditional Tuscan domestic furniture, translated into cleaner forms suited to twentieth-century interiors.

With its broad proportions, practical interior and unusually sculptural handles, this Arcigliano sideboard sits comfortably between architecture and cabinetmaking. It could serve as storage in a dining room, living space or restrained contemporary interior, where the walnut and horizontal composition can be viewed at full scale.

Condition

The sideboard remains in good vintage condition, with scratches, small marks and variations to the finish consistent with age and use. Visible wear is present particularly on the top and door fronts, yet the walnut retains an attractive, even character.
