This “Osso” table lamp by Carlo Nason for Mazzega, designed in the 1970s, doesn’t follow a formal outline—it builds its presence through texture, opacity, and glow.
Design
The form is irregular, organic, and softly contoured. At first glance, it resembles a bone or natural coral formation, with a surface that appears both dense and porous. Hand-blown Murano glass gives the lamp its body, with a semi-translucent milky finish layered over clear glass. When lit, this layering creates a deep, ambient warmth. Light diffuses through small pockets and thicker folds of glass, producing a surface that feels alive. The base is discreet, letting the form hover slightly above the surface it rests on. Unlike more conventional lighting, this lamp works as a sculpture when off—its presence doesn’t rely on illumination. The name “Osso,” Italian for “bone,” reflects both the shape and the mood: something solid but not rigid, abstract but not cold.
This piece is typical of Carlo Nason’s experimentation during his work with Mazzega, where sculptural intuition met technical craft. He lets the material lead, and the result holds energy even when still.
The “Osso” is a quiet light. It doesn’t push forward—it draws you in.
