Italian lighting of the post-war period often found character in the meeting of simple materials and inventive construction. This pair of table lamps follows that approach closely, combining opaline glass with a slender brass framework and an unusual tripod stance. Their appearance relates convincingly to lighting associated with Angelo Lelii and Arredoluce during the 1950s and early 1960s.

Design

Each lamp centres around a single sculptural opaline glass diffuser, formed with a rounded upper body that narrows towards its base. When switched off, the glass has an even white appearance; illuminated, it distributes the light across its entire surface and takes on a warm tone. This use of opaline glass alongside brass appears repeatedly in documented Arredoluce lighting of the period.

Supporting the glass is an exceptionally light brass structure. Three thin rods rise alongside the lower section of the diffuser before bending outwards to form the tripod feet. Rather than hiding the construction beneath a conventional base, the framework becomes part of the composition. Its wide stance visually balances the volume of glass above and gives the lamps an almost weightless quality.

At the top, a shallow domed brass disc closes the diffuser. Six circular perforations arranged around its centre allow small points of light to escape upwards, introducing a graphic detail visible from above. The contrast between this perforated metal element, the softly diffused glass and the linear legs gives the design much of its character.

Used together, the lamps form a balanced pair for a console, side tables or bedside setting; separately, each has enough presence to function as a small lighting object in its own right.

With their economical construction and unusual proportions, these lamps capture the experimental character associated with Italian lighting around the mid-century period. The combination of opaline glass, warm light and fine brass lines gives the pair a sculptural presence without relying on ornament.

Condition

The pair is in good vintage condition, with traces of use and age visible on the glass and brass components. Some patination, surface marks and scratches can be seen, particularly around the brass caps and lower sections of the glass; the lamps are shown functioning in the photographs.
