Italian lighting from the 1970s often balanced architectural clarity with decorative presence. These wall lamps by Gaetano Sciolari are a fine example of that approach, combining geometric aluminium elements with sculptural glass diffusers in a composition that reads almost as a small wall-mounted construction.

Design

Composed of brushed aluminium profiles arranged in an asymmetrical grid, each lamp creates a layered architectural composition. Horizontal and vertical bars intersect at varying heights, establishing a sense of rhythm and depth that recalls the geometric language found in late modernist and Space Age design. Rather than concealing its structure, the design celebrates it, allowing the framework to become an integral visual element.

Positioned along the aluminium supports are three substantial glass cubes, each housing an E14 mirror bulb. The textured cast glass softens and refracts the light, creating a warm glow that contrasts with the cool metallic framework. Mirror-headed bulbs further enhance the effect by directing light into the glass, producing reflections and subtle highlights throughout the composition.

Sciolari became known for lighting that merged architectural order with decorative impact. During the 1960s and 1970s his work often incorporated polished metals, geometric arrangements and innovative light diffusion. These lamps reflect that philosophy particularly well, presenting light as both illumination and sculptural material. Whether installed individually or as a pair, they create a graphic presence on the wall, functioning equally as lighting fixtures and decorative objects.

A thoughtful design in which aluminium, glass and reflected light come together in a balanced composition. The architectural arrangement and atmospheric illumination place these lamps firmly within the vocabulary of Italian design from the 1970s.

Condition

Both lamps remain in very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with their period. The brushed aluminium surfaces retain a pleasing appearance, and the glass cubes are well preserved. Each lamp is fitted with three E14 sockets intended for mirror bulbs.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
