A sculptural glass piece from one of Italy’s most influential postwar designers. The 'Polpo' vase by Gae Aulenti was produced by Venini in a limited edition of 50 in 2006 and carries the signature “Venini 2006 Gae Aulenti 14/50” underneath. It reflects the architect's playful experimentation with form and material, realised through the centuries-old craftsmanship of Murano glassmaking.

Design

The vase features a spherical core of transparent ocean-blue glass. Six arched, tapering appendages flow from the mouth, their deep blue lines accentuated by embedded red specks. Each element is individually applied and shaped while hot, creating a rhythm of movement around the otherwise smooth body. The design references the marine world, with the curving elements suggesting tentacles of an octopus—hence the name “Polpo.” Light interacts well with the transparent mass and layered trails, throwing vivid shadows and reflections. Proportions are generous, and the form retains a fluid balance despite its expressive surface.

Aulenti, known for her architectural works and industrial designs, approached each medium with a sculptor’s eye. In this piece, the boundaries between utility and form blur completely. The 'Polpo' vase doesn’t follow traditional typologies but instead takes its own path, shaped by intuition and material logic.

Condition

The vase is in excellent condition. The surface shows minimal signs of handling and no damage is visible to the applied glass elements. Signature and edition number are clearly etched at the base.
