Balance and clarity characterise this refined pair of wooden stools, echoing the design language of Charlotte Perriand. Their straightforward yet thoughtful construction pays tribute to a functionalist ethos without sacrificing sculptural appeal.
Description
These three-legged stools recall the rustic elegance and tactile warmth seen in Perriand’s designs during her time collaborating with French and Japanese craftsmen in the mid-20th century. Each stool is crafted from solid stained ash wood with a round, thick seat and tapered legs. The angled legs are joined by a softly turned stretcher, providing both reinforcement and visual rhythm.
The deliberate simplicity of the form references Perriand’s commitment to honest materials and practical use. While the designer's hand behind this pair is unknown, the proportions, stance and shaping draw clear influence from Perriand’s seminal works from the 1940s and 50s. The low-sheen finish allows the grain to remain prominent, accentuating the organic structure of the wood. Their sturdy build and compact size make them adaptable.
Despite their modest scale, they command attention through their thoughtful detailing and sculptural balance. The slight variation in the wood’s tone and the hand-turned stretcher reinforce their artisanal character.
Condition
Both stools are in good vintage condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. The wood remains structurally sound, with no visible cracks or repairs.
I just received the absolutely gorgeous credenza yesterday. It was professionally packaged and delivered just as promised. I cannot more highly recommend AtKris Studio.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
Excellent responsiveness, and with wonderful curatorial chops!
