A layered dialogue between form and light defines this sculptural table lamp by Albano Poli for Poliarte, crafted in Verona during the 1970s.

Design

Made from thick slabs of crystal glass, the lamp features a vertical arrangement of concentric glass discs, their subtly textured surfaces catching and refracting the light. The repeated horizontal bands, separated by slender metal rods, create a rhythmic architectural composition that recalls both Brutalist forms and the optimistic futurism of post-war Italian design. The construction is deceptively simple: twelve circular frosted glass plates are stacked to form a cylindrical body that emits a soft, diffused glow when illuminated. A minimal metal frame keeps the discs slightly apart, allowing light to pass through each layer and accentuating the depth of the design. Even when unlit, the lamp has a strong sculptural presence.

Albano Poli founded Poliarte in the early 1960s with the ambition of combining traditional glassmaking with architectural lighting. Trained as both a painter and mosaic artist, he brought a strong sense of composition and materiality to his designs. This table lamp dates from the same creative period as his larger wall and ceiling fixtures, which often employ repeated modular glass elements to create depth, rhythm, and atmosphere. It is a refined example of Italian lighting design from the 1970s, where craftsmanship and architectural thinking come together.

Condition

The lamp is in very good vintage condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age. The first glass disc is slightly distorted, a small manufacturing irregularity that does not detract from its overall appearance. There is also a small chip around one of the screw mounting holes, which is largely concealed once assembled. The remaining glass discs are intact, and the lamp is structurally sound and ready for use.
