There is a certain theatricality to Carlo Nason’s lighting designs from the 1970s, where Murano glass becomes less a decorative element and more a sculptural material. This “Osso” table lamp for Mazzega captures that approach through an organic silhouette and a textured surface that transforms completely once illuminated. Produced during a period in which Italian lighting experimented with softer and more fluid forms, the lamp balances functional lighting with an almost biomorphic presence.
Design
Formed from hand-blown Murano glass, the lamp resembles a melting or growing structure, somewhere between mineral formation and organic sculpture. The irregular contours and layered translucent white glass create a subtle sense of movement across the surface. When switched off, the piece appears almost icy and opaque; once illuminated, the interior light reveals intricate striations and trapped textures within the glass. This transition gives the object a changing character throughout the day.
Nason, who came from a long Venetian glassmaking lineage, frequently worked with light diffusion and sculptural transparency. His designs for Mazzega often moved away from strict geometric modernism towards softer and more expressive compositions. Here, the glass body functions as a single continuous volume without visible interruption, allowing the light to spread evenly through the form. The lamp carries a quiet monumentality despite its relatively compact scale, giving it equal presence on a console, pedestal or side table.
An atmospheric piece that reflects the experimental character of Italian lighting during the 1970s and the close relationship between Murano craftsmanship and modern design production.
Condition
The lamp remains in very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. Glass surfaces are well preserved and the illumination functions properly.
