A true exploration of form and function. This sculptural wall lamp by Angelo Brotto for Esperia shows how lighting can transcend utility and become an object of architectural character. Designed in Italy during the 1970s, it reflects Brotto’s experimental approach to materials and geometry.

Design

The piece features a bold, semi-spherical teak grid that gently curves outward from the wall. Twenty-one compartments make up the grid structure, seven of which are fitted with recessed spotlights, each encased in a circular brass ring. The layout calls to mind a tic-tac-toe board or retro-futurist console, playing with symmetry and rhythm. When lit, the bulbs glow warmly, casting subtle shadows between the wooden ribs and enhancing the sculptural quality of the work. Its depth gives the lamp a dynamic presence, with shifting silhouettes depending on the viewer’s angle.

On one side, the word “Esperia” is subtly engraved into the wood, marking its origin. Brotto’s design avoids ornamentation, instead relying on proportion, repetition and material contrast to hold attention. The result is an object that feels both grounded and experimental.

This wall light does more than illuminate; it activates the wall and becomes a point of visual gravity. Both functional and dimensional, it invites closer inspection while blending into architectural surroundings.

Condition

Overall, the lamp presents in fine condition. Light signs of age are present on the wood and metal, consistent with careful use over time.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
