This sideboard by Silvio Coppola for Bernini reflects the designer’s distinct vision for honest materials and pure architectural lines. Produced in Italy in 1964, it forms part of Coppola’s limited and carefully crafted body of work for the iconic manufacturer.
Design
Crafted from walnut, the piece features a strong and symmetrical structure with thick, squared legs that anchor its visual weight. The upper section is composed of a series of open compartments and a central unit with four original white ceramic bowls, still intact. This modular element serves both functional and sculptural purposes, breaking up the horizontal line with subtle rhythm.
Below, the sideboard is equipped with double-door cabinets that open to reveal ample storage with a central shelf. The circular wooden knobs sit slightly proud of the surfaces, maintaining Coppola’s preference for simple, integrated hardware. The design avoids ornamentation, instead relying on proportion, texture, and thoughtful composition. Shallow cubbies along the top shelf add further rhythm to the silhouette. The wood shows a characteristic finish with darkened patterns throughout, a feature that enhances its tactile appeal.
An early and expressive example of Coppola’s architectural approach to furniture design. The balance between form and function is especially evident here, showing Bernini’s precise execution.
Condition
The sideboard is in good vintage condition. Surface wear and patina are consistent with age, and the ceramic containers remain complete and original.
Table arrived very well crated, seller made process seamless.
This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
Quality, flexibility, very good communication, very happy with the coffee table I bought.
