French furniture maker Seltz approached the desk as more than a fixed working surface. Produced in France during the 1980s, this example combines solid beech, integrated storage and an unusual adjustable construction, giving a familiar piece of furniture an architectural character.

Design

Made in solid beech, the desk consists of two substantial pedestal units supporting a broad rectangular top. Four black wooden spheres separate the writing surface from the pedestals, creating a narrow band of space that makes the top appear to float above the heavier base. A recessed metal profile beneath the top forms part of the adjustment system, allowing its position to be altered whilst retaining a stable working surface.

Storage is divided asymmetrically between the two sides. One pedestal incorporates two drawers, with the lower drawer extending almost the full height of the unit, whilst its counterpart contains four drawers of graduated proportions. Each front is shaped with a diagonal recessed grip rather than fitted with separate hardware. These elongated cut-outs introduce a repeated graphic line across the otherwise restrained construction.

Inside, a fitted organiser tray has been carved directly from the wood, with compartments for writing instruments and smaller desk accessories. The broad top has softly rounded edges and a subtle curve towards its ends, tempering the geometry of the pedestal bases.

Seltz is known to have produced furniture designed by Pierre Chapo, including his B40 desk. The construction and emphasis on solid timber seen here share aspects of Chapo’s approach, yet no reliable documentation found attributes this particular model to him.

Its adjustable construction gives the desk an unusual combination of flexibility and visual balance. Generous storage and a large working surface make it equally suited to a private study, executive office or interior centred on post-war French furniture.

Condition

The desk has been restored and presents in very good condition. Minor traces of previous use may remain in keeping with its age, whilst the drawers and adjustable construction retain their intended function.
