An exceptional executive desk designed by French designer Jacques Hauville during the 1950s. With its architectural silhouette, contrasting materials and unusual technical details, this rare piece captures the experimental spirit of French post-war modernism.

Design

The desk features an elongated walnut body combined with cream-coloured Formica surfaces, creating a balance between warmth and functionality. Its sculptural construction is defined by sloping side panels, a long elevated writing surface and two projecting compartments that frame an open central seating area. Beneath the desk, angled steel legs with walnut feet lend the substantial structure a surprisingly light appearance.

Particularly interesting is the sophisticated arrangement of concealed storage. Hinged compartments along the rear edge of the writing surface and drawers integrated into the desk provide space for documents and personal belongings. The side compartments incorporate further divided storage, reflecting Hauville's interest in practical furniture design. Perhaps the most curious features are the small wooden push-buttons integrated into the front edge. Their original purpose remains uncertain, adding an element of mystery to an already unusual design.

Most probably manufactured by BEMA, the company founded by Hauville, this desk combines the functional principles of French modernism with an almost cinematic character, reminiscent of the sophisticated interiors of early James Bond films.

A rare example of 1950s French executive furniture, equally suited to a private study, an architectural office or a carefully composed interior.

Condition

The desk is in very good vintage condition, with minor scratches and small areas of damage to the Formica surfaces. Following purchase, the piece undergoes a thorough inspection and restoration in our workshop, preserving its original character and materials.
