A chair like this carries its character with quiet authority. Its architectural frame, pronounced side panels and dark accents place it close to the Amsterdam School vocabulary, where utility and expression meet in a compact, sculptural whole.

Design

This lounge chair is executed in solid oak with broad armrests, panelled sides and an adjustable backrest, a feature that adds a practical layer to its composed silhouette. The proportions are low and grounded, yet the long horizontal arms and upright posts give the piece a clear rhythm. Black-stained details on the sides and feet introduce contrast and strengthen the graphic quality of the design. That balance between construction and ornament is very much in keeping with Dutch furniture from the interwar period, when makers associated with the Amsterdam School sought to give everyday objects a more expressive presence.

What stands out here is the restraint of the composition. Rather than relying on carved decoration, the chair builds its identity through line, mass and the interplay of materials. The warm tone of the oak is paired with a newly done, deep blue velvet upholstery, which softens the geometry and adds a subtle sense of comfort. Seen from the side, the adjustable backrest creates an elegant sloping profile, and from the rear the chair shows a carefully considered framework with visible notches that speak to its functional intent. In a living room, library or reading corner, it holds its ground with ease and offers a distinct period accent without becoming heavy.

Condition

The chair remains in good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are minor traces of use to the wood and some light wear to the upholstery, which fit the age of the piece well. The upholstery is newly done.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
