Furniture from the Amsterdam School carries a sculptural presence that moves beyond mere function. Emerging in the Netherlands in the early twentieth century, this movement sought expressive forms, visible craftsmanship and a unity between architecture and interior. This reclining armchair reflects that ambition in a compact yet powerful composition.

Design

Crafted in solid oak, the chair displays the characteristic architectural construction associated with the Amsterdam School. The upright posts and horizontal armrests form a strict framework, softened by the curved side panels that sweep forward in a controlled arc. Vertical slats beneath the arms introduce rhythm, allowing light to pass through and preventing the volume from becoming heavy. The lower rail is finished with a carved geometric band, a subtle decorative gesture that anchors the piece visually. Tapered legs, gently faceted towards the feet, reinforce the sense of structure. At the back, an adjustable mechanism with a metal rod allows the backrest to recline in several positions, combining comfort with sculptural intent. The ochre upholstery, finished in a small-scale dotted pattern, adds warmth to the oak and echoes the expressive colour palettes often favoured in interiors of the period.

Condition

The condition of the chair is good, showing signs of use consistent with its age. The upholstery is clearly old and in keeping with the period character, yet it remains well preserved and free from damage. However,we would recommend re-upholstery. Before shipping, the piece will receive a careful touch-up in our studio to ensure it arrives in optimal condition.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
