With their geometric clarity and architectural poise, these Hague School dining chairs offer a grounded presence shaped by the ideals of early 20th-century Dutch design.

Design

Constructed in the 1920s or 1930s and made in the style of Hendrik Wouda, a leading designer associated with Pander & Zonen, this set reflects the formal restraint of the Dutch Art Deco movement. The solid, angular frames are crafted in oak, lending a dignified depth of tone that pairs effortlessly with the moss green velvet upholstery. Each backrest is constructed with three horizontal slats, subtly curved and framed by uprights that taper gently from seat to crest, creating a confident, rhythmic structure. The legs form a distinctive H-shaped base, one of the stylistic trademarks of Wouda and the Hague School, emphasising function without denying elegance. The compact proportions and clean composition suggest these chairs were designed not for grandeur, but for serene order within a modern interior.

Furniture from the Hague School era was often created in dialogue with the ideas of the De Stijl movement, but with a heavier and more architectural approach. These chairs illustrate that mood: sober yet carefully balanced, rigorous but tactile in finish.

Condition

All chairs are structurally sound and show expected traces of wear throughout the frames, including light scuffs and small edge losses. The green velvet upholstery appears later and is in good condition, with no tears or stains observed. However, re-upholstery is possible in our internal workshop. Feel free to reach out to discuss options.
