Some objects quietly transform a space through their material presence alone. This sculptural bowl by Carlo Nason for Mazzega demonstrates the expressive possibilities of Murano glass, where colour, transparency and form merge into a composition that changes character with every shift of light.

Design

Designed during the 1970s, model S 502 reflects Carlo Nason's experimental approach to glass. Coming from a renowned Murano glassmaking family, Nason consistently sought to move beyond traditional decorative objects by treating glass as an architectural material. This bowl captures that philosophy through its free-flowing geometry and carefully balanced asymmetry.

Formed from thick crystal glass, the piece combines a clear section with a delicate violet-tinted segment, creating a subtle dialogue between colour and transparency. Rather than following a conventional circular profile, the bowl unfolds into folded planes and angular peaks that resemble fabric frozen in motion. The textured surface, natural air bubbles and softly undulating edges emphasise the hand-crafted production process, allowing every reflection to animate the object differently throughout the day.

Its generous proportions make it suitable as a centrepiece on a dining table, sideboard or coffee table, where it functions equally well as a decorative sculpture or as a practical fruit or presentation bowl. Even when empty, the crystalline surface captures and refracts light, producing an ever-changing display of reflections that highlights the exceptional quality of Murano craftsmanship.

A sculptural composition that perfectly represents the innovative spirit of Italian glass design during the 1970s, balancing artistic expression with everyday functionality.

Condition

The bowl remains in very good vintage condition with light signs of age and use consistent with careful ownership. The glass is free from chips or cracks, and the subtle variations, small bubbles and slight irregularities are inherent to the original hand-blown manufacturing process.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
