A flower translated into glass and light, Carlo Nason’s LS 184 hanging lamp brings an organic quality to Murano glass. Produced by AV Mazzega, the design belongs to Nason’s experimental approach to modular glass lighting, where individual elements form a sculptural whole. This example combines clear and green glass, giving the lamp a distinct character both illuminated and switched off.  

Design

The LS 184 is composed of individual curved glass elements arranged around a central light source. Each piece resembles a broad petal, narrowing towards the top before opening into a softly rounded lower section. Seen together, these overlapping elements create a flower-like silhouette without becoming overly literal.

Colour plays an important part in the construction. A band of olive green glass defines the upper section, gradually giving way to clear glass below. Light passes freely through the lower sections and is filtered by the darker glass above, producing different effects depending on the viewing angle.

Small bubbles, ripples and variations remain visible throughout the glass. Rather than hiding the production process, these characteristics give each section its own surface and alter the refraction of light. Thick rounded edges further emphasise the weight of the material.

Suspended above a dining table, in an entrance hall or within a seating area, the lamp works particularly well where its glass can be viewed from several sides. The LS 184 balances the physical presence of thick Murano glass with an open, almost botanical form. Its green and clear palette gives this version a particularly natural expression, changing noticeably between daylight and artificial illumination.

Condition

The lamp appears to be in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use. The cord shows some discoloration but in our view it contributes to the character and charm of this amazing piece.
