This set of two wall appliques of Sciolari sits comfortably within the period context of Gaetano Sciolari’s lighting output, where metal structures and glass or acrylic diffusers recur. A very versatile piece that can be used in any interior.
Design
Each applique is built around a compact square glass block set into a composition of brushed aluminium bars. Two horizontal members pass across the front at different heights, and several vertical uprights rise and fall behind them, so the lamp is read first as a small architectural arrangement rather than a single enclosing shade.
The outline changes noticeably from one view to another. Head-on, the projecting bars extend beyond the glass on both sides and produce a stepped, asymmetrical profile, with the taller upright pulling the composition upwards and the lower members widening it laterally. Seen at an angle, those same projections make the light appear thinner and more layered, as the bars separate into shallow planes around the central block.
The glass diffuser is substantial enough to hold its own against the aluminium frame. Itssquare outer edge contains a rounded recessed centre, and that shift from straight perimeter to circular cavity focuses attention on the bulb without exposing the source as a bare fitting. When illuminated, the glass catches and refracts the light so that bright ripples fall across the adjacent aluminium bars and spread onto the wall. The effect is localised rather than washed out: the frame stays legible, and the reflections describe the edges of the projecting members.
The brushed finish of the aluminium keeps the surfaces matte enough for the structure to read cleanly in daylight, with the ends of the rectangular bars left plainly expressed. The relationship between projecting support, square glass centre and cast shadow is what gives the pair its clearest character within a 1970s Italian lighting context.
As a pair, the appliques read as a measured study in intersecting planes and concentrated light, with the central glass element held within a visibly open aluminium framework. Their strongest character lies in that relation between linear support and compact diffuser, which remains legible whether the lights are on or off.
Condition
Visible wear is light and consistent with age and use, with small marks and minor rubbing to the brushed aluminium surfaces and edges. The sides show some slight discoloration.
Table arrived very well crated, seller made process seamless.
