A long, low silhouette and expressive wood grain give this model 514 coffee table by Gianfranco Frattini for Bernini its character. Viewed from above, the rectangular top appears restrained; from the side, the sculpted framework introduces a softer rhythm.
Design
The tabletop displays flowing grain patterns in rosewood, crossed by darker markings. Its slender edge extends beyond the supporting structure, emphasising the table’s horizontal proportions. Beneath it, a recessed frame creates a shadow line that visually separates the top from the base.
Four legs merge into curved horizontal supports. Each features a doubled profile, with narrow contours following the transition from the upright to the frame. These details give the base an architectural quality, balancing the broad surface above with open space below. Rounded transitions soften the rectangular outline without interrupting its clarity.
Trained as an architect and a former apprentice of Gio Ponti, Frattini worked across furniture and interiors. His designs for Bernini show an interest in woodworking, structure and proportion, expressed here through the relationship between the figured surface and sculpted base.
Model 514 is referenced in Giuliana Gramigna’s Repertorio 1950–1980, published in Milan in 1985, on page 101.
Placed before a sofa or between lounge chairs, the table provides a generous surface for books and objects. Its low proportions leave the surrounding interior open, allowing the grain and curved supports to remain the focus.
Condition
The photographs show surface marks and wear along parts of the edges and base, consistent with age and use. Please refer to the detail photographs for a closer view of the finish.
