Quietly sculptural and immaculately resolved, this rosewood sideboard designed by Gianfranco Frattini for Bernini reveals the architectural sensibility behind his best work.

Design

Produced in Italy in the 1960s, the piece combines utility with refined detailing. The long, rectangular form rests on a distinctive base of Y-shaped legs that curve inward with a gentle precision, lifting the volume with clarity and rhythm. The front features three tambour doors, each cut from vividly grained rosewood veneer that flows like a landscape across the surface. Behind the left door are five drawers with integrated elliptical pulls, each echoing Frattini’s fascination with built-in function and tactile form. The central and right compartments offer adjustable shelving, providing ample space for storage while maintaining a clean external façade.

Frattini was a trained architect and a founding member of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI). His work with Bernini, one of the most respected Italian cabinetmakers of the time, was shaped by a mutual respect for precision joinery and material honesty. The base of this sideboard, with its layered vertical feet and shadow lines, reflects Bernini’s high level of craftsmanship and Frattini’s disciplined vision.

A restrained and versatile cabinet, rich in material expression and architectural logic.

Condition

The sideboard is in very good original condition. Some gentle surface wear, particularly on the top, consistent with age. Tambour doors function smoothly, and interior wood is clean and well-preserved.
