A sculptural approach to light defines this table lamp attributed to Philippe Jean. Conceived in the 1970s, it reflects a period where lighting moved beyond utility and entered the territory of architectural form.
Design
The composition is built around a vertical brass structure, assembled from interlocking geometric elements that create a rhythmic, almost modular silhouette. Each block is cut with angled planes, catching and reflecting light across its surface, giving the lamp a shifting presence throughout the day. The brass has developed a soft patina, adding depth without obscuring its original finish. Above, a curved rectangular shade in a dark brown textile introduces contrast, diffusing the light into a warm, controlled glow. This interplay between the structured base and the softer shade reflects a broader design language of the 1970s, where balance between strict geometry and tactile materials was carefully considered.
Philippe Jean’s work, though less documented than some of his contemporaries, often leans towards architectural abstraction, suggesting an influence from modernist sculpture and interior design.A piece that operates equally as a functional light source and as a sculptural object. Its proportions allow it to sit comfortably on a console, desk, or side table, where it provides both ambient light and visual structure.
Condition
The condition is good with visible signs of age on the brass surface, including light scratches and oxidation marks. The shade shows minor wear consistent with use.
