This set of two Planula armchairs was designed during the 1970s by Ettore Sottsass in collaboration with Perry King and produced by Planula di Agliana in Italy.

Design

Each chair combines a softly upholstered body with a distinctly mechanical pedestal. The broad, gently inclined backrest, low wraparound arms and loose seat cushion form a comfortable, enveloping shell. Viewed from the side, this upholstered volume appears to float above a central aluminium column.

The sculptural cast-aluminium base consists of four radiating arms terminating in rounded, dome-shaped feet. Its cool metallic surface provides a striking counterpoint to the chairs’ soft silhouette. The seats swivel and can be adjusted in height, introducing the functionality of an office chair into a more relaxed and expressive domestic design.

Both chairs have been newly upholstered in a warm sand-coloured fabric by Designs of the Time. Its soft, subtly varied surface catches the light beautifully and accentuates the chairs’ rounded construction. The restrained colour allows the unusual form and characteristic aluminium bases to remain the focus.

Chair can be lowered to 47 cm.

Condition

The chairs have been professionally restored and newly upholstered in a quality fabric by Designs of the Time. The aluminium bases retain surface wear, light scratches and patination appropriate to their age. A partially preserved Planula manufacturer’s label remains present on one pedestal.
