Few designers understood the relationship between structure and proportion as intuitively as Angelo Mangiarotti. Trained as both an architect and sculptor, he approached furniture as an exercise in balance, where every line served a purpose. The De Nos series reflects this philosophy with a restrained composition that relies on geometry, material, and craftsmanship rather than ornament.
Design
Produced by Sorgente del Mobile in Cantù around 1975, this coffee table combines a dark-stained solid walnut frame with a circular crystal glass top. The design is centred around a continuous circular wooden ring that gently thickens towards its outer edge, creating a subtle sense of volume without appearing heavy. Three cylindrical legs emerge seamlessly from the frame, giving the impression that the table has been carved from a single piece of timber. Their placement provides visual balance while allowing the transparent glass top to appear almost suspended within the walnut structure.
Mangiarotti consistently sought clarity in construction, believing that materials should express their own qualities. Here, the warmth of solid walnut contrasts with the lightness of the crystal glass, creating an elegant dialogue between mass and transparency. The circular form encourages interaction from every angle, making the table equally suited to a refined seating arrangement, a library, or an architecturally considered living space. The restrained silhouette embodies the quiet confidence that characterises much of Italian design from the 1970s.
A sculptural object with a calm presence, this coffee table demonstrates Mangiarotti's ability to reduce furniture to its essential elements without sacrificing warmth or functionality. More than fifty years after its introduction, the design remains contemporary through its balanced proportions and enduring craftsmanship.
Condition
The table remains in very good vintage condition with light signs of use consistent with age. The solid walnut frame retains a beautiful dark finish, and the original crystal glass top presents well with minor traces of wear expected from careful use.
