Designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by A. Mikael Laursen in Aarhus during the 1960s, model ML 188 is a refined example of Scandinavian modernism. Wikkelsø, best known for his sculptural seating, applied the same sensitivity to proportion in his table designs, creating furniture that feels balanced from every angle. The generously sized rectangular tabletop is finished in beautifully figured palisander veneer, displaying dramatic grain patterns that shift from warm reddish-brown to darker streaks. The softly rounded edges lighten the visual weight of the top and contrast with the crisp geometry of the brushed chromium-plated steel base

Design

Rather than placing the legs directly beneath the corners, Wikkelsø introduced distinctive chromium-plated brackets that project slightly beyond the tabletop. This subtle construction detail gives the table an architectural character and creates the impression that the veneered top is floating above its frame. The combination of warm timber and polished industrial materials captures the material honesty that defined Danish furniture during the period. Equally suited to a seating arrangement in a modernist interior or paired with lounge chairs, the table possesses a timeless versatility that has remained relevant for decades.

Condition

The coffee table remains in very good vintage condition with light signs of use consistent with age. The palisander veneer has developed a beautiful patina, the brushed chromium-plated steel base presents very well, and the original A. Mikael Laursen manufacturer's label is retained beneath the tabletop.

This bar is amazing. Beautiful and exactly as described. A custom crate (which was a work of art itself) was built in order to ship the piece to the U.S. The bar arrived in perfect condition without a scratch. I will say that take the crate apart was not easy and was a two-person job. But worth it in the end
